Ríos Ovalle, Juan

Born in Ponce in 1863 into a family of musicians. He was a member of the orchestra led by Juan Morel Campos, where he played first clarinet. He composed danzas known for their rich lyrics. He was succesor as orchestra director to Juan Morel Campos who died prematurely in 1896, as the most authentic representative of the Ponce school of danza.

The danzas of Rios Ovalle have the same formal structure of the compositions of Juan Morel Campos. Rios Ovalle used the güiro as the sole percussion instrument in his orchestra. His best known compositions are “Angelina”, “Teresa”, “Lluvia y Perlas”, “Odalisca” and “La Graciosita”.

Rios Ovalle passed away in 1928.
