Born in Orocovis, Puerto Rico, Jiménez is known as “El Jíbaro” and for his recordings with ardent patriotic and nationalistic themes. Typical of these is La Estrella Sola. His songs cover the whole spectrum of musical genres from décimas and plenas to ballads and guaguancó, salsa and Nueva Trova.

Given the intensifying protests in Puerto Rico and around the world over the US Navy use of Vieques, an island that is part of Puerto Rico, for military exercises and live bombing, it is not surprising that Jiménez would devote his talents to a song such as Son de Vieques in protest. The song was one of many that were incuded in the Son de Vieques album he produced along with Ismael Miranda in 2001.
