Astol, Felix - Danza
Felix Astol was born in the Catalunia province of Spain in 1813 but moved to Puerto Rico,
his adopted homeland. He occupies a special place in the hearts of Puerto Ricans as the
composer of their national anthem:
Astol wrote "La Borinqueña" in 1867. Although some attribute the work to others, including Francisco "Paco" Ramírez Ortiz, all reliable evidence points to Astol as the legitimate composer. A year after composing the danza, the famous Puerto Rican poetess, Lola Rodríguez de Tió, wrote lyrics to Astol's danza melody. It was a time of great turbulence in Puerto Rico, as nationlism and revolution against Spain was sweeping across the political landscape. The lyrics were in keeping with that spirit. However, the lyrics known and sung today were penned some years later, in 1898, by another famous Puerto Rican and man of letters: Manuel Fernández Juncos. Regardless of the history of "La Borinqueña", Astol is known to have composed other danzas, among them, "Tu y Yo". There is no doubt that he was a talented singer and composer. Lyrics of LA BORINQUEÑA
